Print Area Detection and Smart Scaling
A spreadsheet has no pages until someone prints it. That is the whole difficulty of this conversion: .xlsx holds a grid, and the page layout is a separate set of instructions inside the workbook that most people never open. Print area, page order, scale or fit-to-width, rows repeated at the top of each page, whether gridlines and headings appear, headers and footers, margins. Those instructions are what decides where the page breaks land. The conversion runs LibreOffice Calc in headless mode and obeys that stored layout, which is why the same file always comes out the same way and why the fastest fix for an ugly result is upstream. Select the range that matters and set it as the print area. If the table is wider than the paper, set scaling to one page wide and let the height run. Turn on repeated header rows so page four still says what each column is. Then check the print preview: whatever you see there is what the PDF will contain. Three details are worth knowing before you send the file. Formulas are gone from the output; a PDF carries the values that were on screen, which is usually the point of converting, since nobody can nudge a cell afterwards. Cell formatting decides the text, so a date stored as 2026-08-21 prints as whatever the format says, and a number displaying 1,240 that actually holds 1,239.6 prints the rounded version. And a column too narrow for its number shows ##### in Excel and prints exactly that, so widen it first. Accepted inputs are .xlsx and .xls, up to 100 MB per file. Every sheet with content is exported, one after another, into a single PDF. This one runs on the server because LibreOffice does the rendering, so the file is uploaded, converted and then deleted within the hour by a purge that runs every fifteen minutes.
